What about the yellow?

red-winged blackbird Mommy and I went to PetSmart yesterday to pick up some new litter and crunchies. On our way there, I sawed out the window, the most peculiar birdie. It was all black 'cept for the top of his wings. I meowed to Mommy and asked her if she knew what it was but she didn't know either. I thought perhaps this would be another chance for an investigation... But my wise Gramma knew just what it was. It's always good to have apprentices for these types of situations.
Gramma called it a "Red Winged Blackbird". And thus began my query. Why is it that a birdie with three colors is only identified by two of them? I am a black and white cat. I'm not known as a black cat, nor a white cat. I think it's just plain wrong to leave out a color from such an unusual birdie. It should be named the red and yellow-winged blackbird. That way, it wouldn't get confused with the red-winged blackbird that lives out in California. Those birdies don't have that third color! Well, some of them do but it is white. And then it should be named the red and white-winged blackbird.
Oh this little bird has sparked such confusion in my little head. But it sure is a fancy one! The ahem...red and yellow winged blackbird likes to live near marshes. Fresh water marshes in particular. This way, they get to eat all those good buggies that live there and at night, they can hide in the tall grassy stuff! Smart little boogers huh? During the winter, they fly where it's warm and become a pain in the neck for farmers. They like to eat corn, rice and even sunflowers. When they fly, they hang out with other blackbirds and starlings. I'd say they're in some sort of a gang but that's just me. I'm in one too...
