You don't look hairy to me!

I was watching the birdie feeder and suddenly there was this really fancy speckled birdie that camed by! I asked my photographer to quickly shoot some photos for me so that I could research it.

It turns out that there am two species of woodpeckers that are uncommonly alike! The hairy and downy woodpeckers are so much alike that I had a hard time deciding which this one was. I have come to the conclusion that it am a female hairy woodpecker. Now this raises some confusion in my little poodin mind. I thought that birdies are feathery? Not hairy!! So...that makes me confused. But I'll check with Tangie and see what he has to say about the whole thing.

Did you know that hairy woodpeckers find their food by listening to the wood? They can feel vibrations of little buggies munching on the wood and that's how they know where to look! Then they peck-peck-peck until they get at the buggie! I guess this little girl decided to stop and enjoy some birdie seed while she was on her hunt for a buggie.

So many cool visitors to your yard Timmy. We're glad you take the time to show us! Those Downy Woodpeckers drilled holes in the front of our house looking for buggies last year. The front is cedar and they pecked & pecked looking for bugs. They didn't find any and all they did was wake us up nice & early every morning with their rat-a-tat noise!

We have one here that sits in the metal gutters on the roof and pecks away at around 6:00 in the morning. Momma says it sounds like a jackhammer. Fortunately, he stopped coming around here back in the spring. I thought we were in for a l o n g summer! LOL!!
